I am pleased to announce that after an in-depth search, Dr. Anil Chopra has been selected as Vice President, Medical Affairs. Dr. Chopra has been the Chief of the Emergency Departments at UHN for the last thirteen years and has just completed a very successful external review of the division. He is an Associate Professor and Clinician Administrator in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He has close affiliations with the University of Toronto in his role as Division Director for Emergency Medicine for the last five years and has just renewed his second five-year term.

Dr. Chopra has a special interest in improving health services delivery, quality and patient safety. In his role as Co-Chair of UHN’s Quality of Care Committee for the past two years, he has worked with leaders across UHN to promote a safety culture and reduce preventable harm. Dr. Chopra has significant experience in faculty recruitment, credentialing, performance appraisal and professional development. As an acting Chair of the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee (ICRC) of CPSO, he has a good understanding of health legislation and physician regulation as it applies to physician practice and conduct, institutional compliance and risk management.

Dr. Chopra will work closely with me, with the clinical Chiefs and Program Medical Directors and with our Vice Presidents, supported by the team in the Medical Affairs office. Together, we will ensure that our medical staff are appointed, credentialed and evaluated appropriately and efficiently.  The combined efforts of our medical leaders will be focused on the creation of an interdisciplinary culture defined by respect and collegiality, the highest quality in care, research and learning.

Moving forward, a search committee will be assembled to oversee a national search for a new Chief of the Emergency Departments.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Chopra in his new role, which he will start on November 15, 2018.
