UHN Chief, Department of Emergency Medicine
Dr. Sam Sabbah has been selected as next Medical Director of the Emergency Departments at UHN. Dr. Sabbah has served in the role of Assistant Medical Director of the Emergency Departments for the past 7 years. He holds a faculty appointment as a Physician in Quality and Innovation in the Department of Medicine at U of T at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Dr. Sabbah completed his Royal College residency training at McGill University in Montreal, a Master’s degree in Health Information Science at the University of Victoria and a certificate program in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at U of T.
Dr. Sabbah’s main academic interests are quality improvement and patient safety, especially as they relate to Information Technology and Innovation. He has led numerous projects that have improved patient care. He plays an active role in hospital-wide and University level IT initiatives such as Health Information System Renewal, Electronic Patient Record optimization, Information Mobility, and Electronic CV management. Dr. Sabbah has led the development and implementation of numerous evidence-based order sets to streamline care and ensure adherence to best practice. He has also contributed to innovative models of care that have reduced hospital admission and improved patient experience. His work was recognized with the first UHN Local Impact Award.
In his time at UHN, Dr. Sabbah has built strong collaborative partnerships across UHN and with other healthcare organizations. He will continue to build on these relationships and work closely with me, with the Vice President Medical Affairs and with leaders across UHN to improve quality of care, patient experience, and provider wellness. Dr Sabbah will began his term on March 6th, 2019.
As Dr. Sabbah takes up this role, it is also a great pleasure for me to thank Dr. Anil Chopra for his outstanding leadership as Medical Director of the Emergency Departments over the past 13 years. Anil has been a spectacular leader, highly regarded across UHN, who is now directing his attention to the role of Vice President Medical Affairs and continues his role as Division Director of the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine. Dr. Chopra built an excellent foundation of care and scholarship in our Emergency Departments and on behalf of all of us at UHN I hope you will join me in thanking him for his outstanding leadership and contributions.
